To mark our return to our 2nd floor gallery on Savile Row, Waterhouse & Dodd are delighted to present Art of the 20th Century, an exhibition of 30 works on paper including watercolours, gouaches, drawings and collages.
Highlights include:
Henri Matisse – a beautifully drawn still life arrangement in charcoal by one of the undisputed masters of 20th century art
Salvador Dali – a beautiful 1960s watercolour exploring the twin themes of sex and chocolate in typically Dali-esque manner
Pablo Picasso – a haunting still life from a series painted in Paris in the last months of the Second World War
Percy Wyndham Lewis – an unusually tender and domestic gouache from 1919, drawn with customary strength and verve
Wilhelmina Barns-Graham – two typically fluid and elegantly restrained wash drawings from the artist’s estate
Lucian Freud – an intimate drawing of his daughter, Anne Freud, given as a gift to celebrate her university degree
Frank Auerbach – an electrifying and vibrant portrait head of the artist’s wife, Julia Wolstenholme
Zao Wou-Ki – a typically elegant 1950s watercolour and ink drawing combining Chinese art with the Western abstract aesthetics of Paul Klee
Frank Stella – a unique abstract collage from 1967 by this great American, considered to be by many the most influential artist of his generation
Hans Hartung – a well-constructed and rhythmic drawing executed with typical grace and precision
The exhibition will take place simultaneously as an online exhibition from 5th - 30th October, and as a gallery show.
All works will be hanging at 16 Savile Row, London W1S 3PL from 5th - 19th October, and will be available to view by appointment thereafter.
